Printable version
1. Sign in or set up an account
Sign in to your HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) online account for things like a personal or business tax account, Self Assessment, Corporation Tax, PAYE for employers, VAT and the Construction Industry Scheme.
If you do not already have sign in details, you’ll be able to create them.
This guide is also available in Welsh (Cymraeg).
Which sign in details to use
There are 2 ways to sign in to HMRC online services:
- Government Gateway – sign in with a user ID (up to 12 characters) and password
- GOV.UK One Login – sign in with an email address and password
If you already use HMRC online services
Continue to use the sign in details you have. This could be:
- a Government Gateway user ID – even if you have GOV.UK One Login sign in details from another government service
- GOV.UK One Login sign in details – for personal tax services
If you have never used HMRC online services
Select ‘Create new sign in details’ when signing in to HMRC online services, even if you have GOV.UK One Login sign in details from another government service or an email subscription.
The service will guide you to create Government Gateway or GOV.UK One Login sign in details.

You can recover or reset your sign in details if you’ve lost them. You’ll be told how to do this when you try to sign in.
Problems receiving an access code
You can receive a code by text message, voice call or authenticator app.
You can change how you receive your access code, for example, if you change your phone number.
Sign in with your Government Gateway user ID and password. Select ‘You can get help’ when asked for an access code and follow the steps.
You may need to confirm your identity. You can tell HMRC about a change to your name, address, income, relationship or gender.
If you’ve been locked out of your account
You’ll be locked out of your account if you enter the wrong sign in details too many times.
Your account will unlock after 2 hours. Helpdesk advisers cannot unlock your account.
