These collectors peer with <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Internet Service Providers, IXPs, academic networks, backbone providers, and <\/span><span class=\"s4\">hyperscalers<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">to gain diverse perspectives o<\/span><span class=\"s4\">f<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> the global routing table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>RouteViews publicly preserves one of the bedrock sources for understanding and analyzing how the Internet evolved during the global expansion phase from the 1990s to today. It's the oldest and most comprehensive BGP data archive in the world that documents the Internet's evolution, second by second, in continuous time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s4\">Our <\/span><span class=\"s4\">focus<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> is to<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> archive<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> global routing information so <\/span><span class=\"s4\">network <\/span><span class=\"s4\">operators, researchers,<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">educators <\/span><span class=\"s4\">and policy makers<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> can<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> use the data to<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> better <\/span><span class=\"s4\">analyze<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, troubleshoot, and secure the Internet\u2019s core infrastructure.<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">Internet routing security is critical for the health<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">stability<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, and reliability<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> of the global Internet. <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Localized adoption and implementation of modern routing security techniques in more networks spanning more countries improves global routing security, and subsequently the interoperation of the many thousands of networks around the world that form the Internet. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">In essence, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">RouteViews<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> functions as a publicly available, multi-perspective looking glass and data archive of the Internet's routing system<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> to support efficient network operations and Internet measurements over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"s8\"><span class=\"s7\">Core Functions and Benefits<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"s11\"><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s10\"><strong>Real-time BGP Data Access<\/strong>:<\/span> RouteViews provides access to current BGP Routing Information Bases (RIBs) and updates via command-line interfaces, a web-based Looking Glass or, increasingly, through APIs and more modern interfaces.<\/div>\n<div class=\"s11\"><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s10\"><strong>Archival Data<\/strong>:<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> The project maintains an invaluable<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> continuously growing <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.routeviews.org\/\">archive <\/a><\/span><span class=\"s4\">of BGP data<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> that documents Internet routing second by second<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">globally, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">which is essential for post-event analysis (\"When did this happen?\").<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"s11\"><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s10\"><strong>BGP Anomaly Detection<\/strong>:<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> The data is used to feed and train tools that monitor, detect, and help mitigate BGP prefix hijacking and other routing anomalies.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"s11\"><strong><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span>Interconnection Analysis<\/strong>: RouteViews data is used to explore relationships between ASNs.<\/div>\n<div class=\"s11\"><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s10\"><strong>Global Visibility<\/strong>:<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> By collecting and <\/span><span class=\"s4\">archiving raw BGP data <\/span><span class=\"s4\">feeds from over a thousand peers across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routeviews.org\/routeviews\/collectors\/\">dozens of collectors<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s4\"> hosted at Internet Exchange Points<\/span><span class=\"s4\">, <\/span><span class=\"s4\">RouteViews<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> offers a <\/span><span class=\"s4\">distinct<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and distributed view of the Internet's control plane.<\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s4\">RouteViews<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> is supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/nsrc.org\/\">Network Startup Resource Center<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\">at the <a href=\"https:\/\/uoregon.edu\/\">University of Oregon<\/a>. We work with colleagues at the RIPE <a href=\"https:\/\/ris.ripe.net\/\">Routing Information Service<\/a> (RIS) <\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\">in Europe to coordinate what we learn about real-world Internet routing with the objective of creating data redundancy, resiliency, and maximizing visibility of the Internet\u2019s global routing table. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Publications that Utilize RouteViews Data<\/h2>\n<p>With contributions from network operators and volunteers all over the world, RouteViews collects BGP data by direct peering at Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) or multi-hop peering. Data are archived and made publicly available for download at <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.routeviews.org\/\">archive.routeviews.org<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lg.routeviews.org\/\">lg.routeviews.org<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/api.routeviews.org\/\">api.routeviews.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Use of the data created and owned by RouteViews (\u201cRouteViews Data\u201d) is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0\/\">CC BY 4.0<\/a>). This means you are generally free to use RouteViews data for network operations and research, provided that you give attribution to RouteViews for use of the data.
