RouteViews<\/span> provides <\/span>detailed <\/span>visibility into the global <\/span>Internet <\/span>routing system by archiving Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)<\/span> routing data from <\/span>thousands<\/span> of <\/span>collaborative <\/span>networks around the world<\/span> utilizing unique Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs)<\/span>.<\/span> RouteViews<\/span> operates a <\/span>platform <\/span>of route collectors deployed strategically at Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) and <\/span>partner networks <\/span>worldwide. These collectors peer with <\/span>Internet Service Providers, IXPs, academic networks, backbone providers, and <\/span>hyperscalers<\/span> to gain diverse perspectives o<\/span>f<\/span> the global routing table.<\/span><\/p>\n

RouteViews publicly preserves one of the bedrock sources for understanding and analyzing how the Internet evolved during the global expansion phase from the 1990s to today. It's the oldest and most comprehensive BGP data archive in the world that documents the Internet's evolution, second by second, in continuous time.<\/p>\n

Our <\/span>focus<\/span> is to<\/span> archive<\/span> global routing information so <\/span>network <\/span>operators, researchers,<\/span> educators <\/span>and policy makers<\/span> can<\/span> use the data to<\/span> better <\/span>analyze<\/span>, troubleshoot, and secure the Internet\u2019s core infrastructure.<\/span> Internet routing security is critical for the health<\/span>, <\/span>stability<\/span>, and reliability<\/span> of the global Internet. <\/span>Localized adoption and implementation of modern routing security techniques in more networks spanning more countries improves global routing security, and subsequently the interoperation of the many thousands of networks around the world that form the Internet. <\/span>In essence, <\/span>RouteViews<\/span> functions as a publicly available, multi-perspective looking glass and data archive of the Internet's routing system<\/span> to support efficient network operations and Internet measurements over time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 <\/span>Real-time BGP Data Access<\/strong>:<\/span> RouteViews provides access to current BGP Routing Information Bases (RIBs) and updates via command-line interfaces, a web-based Looking Glass or, increasingly, through APIs and more modern interfaces.<\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>Archival Data<\/strong>:<\/span> The project maintains an invaluable<\/span> and<\/span> continuously growing archive <\/a><\/span>of BGP data<\/span> that documents Internet routing second by second<\/span>, <\/span>globally, <\/span>which is essential for post-event analysis (\"When did this happen?\").<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>BGP Anomaly Detection<\/strong>:<\/span> The data is used to feed and train tools that monitor, detect, and help mitigate BGP prefix hijacking and other routing anomalies.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>Interconnection Analysis<\/strong>: RouteViews data is used to explore relationships between ASNs.<\/div>\n
\u2022 <\/span>Global Visibility<\/strong>:<\/span> By collecting and <\/span>archiving raw BGP data <\/span>feeds from over a thousand peers across dozens of collectors<\/a><\/span> hosted at Internet Exchange Points<\/span>, <\/span>RouteViews<\/span> offers a <\/span>distinct<\/span> and distributed view of the Internet's control plane.<\/span><\/div>\n

RouteViews<\/span> is supported by the Network Startup Resource Center<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at the University of Oregon<\/a>. We work with colleagues at the RIPE Routing Information Service<\/a> (RIS) <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in Europe to coordinate what we learn about real-world Internet routing with the objective of creating data redundancy, resiliency, and maximizing visibility of the Internet\u2019s global routing table. <\/span><\/p>\n

Publications that Utilize RouteViews Data<\/h2>\n

With contributions from network operators and volunteers all over the world, RouteViews collects BGP data by direct peering at Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) or multi-hop peering. Data are archived and made publicly available for download at archive.routeviews.org<\/a>, lg.routeviews.org<\/a>, and api.routeviews.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Use of the data created and owned by RouteViews (\u201cRouteViews Data\u201d) is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0<\/a>). This means you are generally free to use RouteViews data for network operations and research, provided that you give attribution to RouteViews for use of the data. If you use RouteViews data for research and publications of any kind, please acknowledge the source by using the RouteViews Digital Object Identifier (DOI).<\/p>\n
