When you're a kid you just take trees for granted. Then when you get to be an adult you realize that a fully mature tree cannot be created in an amount of time that fits in a convenient landscaping timeframe for love nor money nor all the powers of science. Then you realize that people are very very very cavalier about chopping them down

"The average white Southerner was not a slaveholder. The average white Southerner was not rich, and the average white Southerner was often exploited by the same elites who enslaved Blacks. But just because all of this is true does not mean that the average poor white Southerner was against slavery. Quite the opposite.
Yes, poor Southern whites were low on the socioeconomic ladder, exploited by elite whites as the underpaid muscle holding the whip. But it was a ladder they intended to climb, and the top ring always stretched just out of reach. White supremacy is, and always has been, a pyramid scheme...
The poor, ignorant white Southern field managers for rich white slaveholders were looked upon by many in the North with contempt. Even Black slaves reserved for them a particular disgust and malice. In Stamped From The Beginning, Ibram Kendi reports that the term "white trash" may actually have been coined by enslaved Blacks to describe the poor whites doing the dirty work of wealthy slaveowners.
Poor Southern whites had sold their souls for their sense of racial superiority, and for many, it was all they had. They would not let go easily."

Chapter 4- Mediocre, Ijeoma Oluo

*and before someone complains, YES we're gonna get to the racism of the North as well.

You shouldn’t date or become serious friends/partners with someone if you can’t stomach the thought of being stuck in a car or train with them for 16 hours.

Here’s my logic:

  • You should be able to work together to solve unexpected problems like fixing a flat tire or getting lost in an unfamiliar station
  • You should feel comfortable and safe enough around this person that you can sit in comfortable silence
  • You should be able to keep each other interested and deal with each others boredom in a healthy way
  • If you’re gonna form a long term partnership with someone you should probably be able to tolerate each other while locked in a small box for a few hours

These tags are hilarious even though I don’t think you intended them to be.

*pulls European closer* The most populous countries in the world are China, India, the United States, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Brazil in that order, with these seven nations alone making up 48.16% of the world population. You may note with the aid of a map that many of these nations are quite large, and would take several days of travel to go across either in cars or on boats. Almost half of the world's population lives in places where you can travel in a cramped vehicle for days and still be within the country. Your worldview is limited and Europe is a tiny outlier in travel time and standards for international relations.

Today's Harpy's birthday. Been thinking about it all week. Been thinking about her. Her laugh. Her voice. The fact I won't hear them again. I don't think it's fully sunk in honestly. I keep expecting to get a text saying "long time no talk let's hang out!" She took forever to reply to texts, it kinda just feels like that, even though I know it's not true. Like a dream I keep expecting to wake up from. I wake and the world makes more sense, less hate in the world, less loss, and Harpy is still here.

I miss her every day. I think about her every day. Some days it's just "Harpy would like this," other days it's all day and every thought I can possibly have. I was just looking in the cabinet with our teas and just thought "Harpy would hate our bad selections of tea" lol. I still flip through memories of her. Her messaging me cuz she recognized the city in a picture I took. Meeting her in a Barnes and Noble. In my house hanging out, in my house carving a pumpkin that one time, her sitting on my bed getting to meet our cat. I remember her at my wedding. I remember her crying across from me at a food court table when she felt like her world was ending. I remember her introducing me to Ethiopian food. Going to Pride with her. Her being three hours late to go to the art museum with me. That last time I saw her, excitedly showing me pictures from her road trip. I wish I was more energetic, I wish I wasn't so physically exhausted so I could have given her more of me.

I'm happy her poetry seems to have gotten somewhat popular. I'm happy that her memorial post has thousands of notes. I loathe how shitty people she would have hated reblog those posts talking about losing a sister or trying to write their own poems about her - you didn't know her and your politics stood against her.

She was beautiful. She was kind. She was amazing. She tried to help so many people. She was active in our local politics and fought some really hard fights. She was genuinely one of the most amazing and unique people this world will ever know.

Happy birthday Harpy. I love you. I miss you.

Right when I started to cry, the birds came out and flew around for us to watch. I don't believe in anything after death, but moments like that make me want to.

Posted April 5th, 2026. post dates don’t show on desktop once OP has been termed, at least for me, and… given the topic of this post, that felt especially cruel.
