Welcome

Hello there! My name is Pengu, and I’m a pokemon care specialist. I’ve worked with pokemon as a rescue volunteer for years now.

The Purpose of This Blog -

I’d like to educate people on the less known features of pokemon, both wild and domesticated! Many people find or adopt pokemon and think they know what to do, fully well intentioned, when in truth they really really don’t.
I specialize in ghost and fairy types, but I’d love to help with any pokemon types! If you find any videos or pictures of pokemon out there in the wild world of tumblr, feel free to send them to me, and I’ll answer to the best of my knowledge!

Ratings -

Videos are rated as such:

Cute: For pet pokemon, the mon seems happy and well taken care of. For wild pokemon, the mon is either being left alone, or safely handled by a professional

Not Cute: This might be someone handling a pet pokemon in stressful situation, or a mon that seems unhealthy in any way. Or a wild mon being handled by someone who is not a proffesional.

Dangerous: This is for dangerous situations, such as handling a more violent mon in the wild, or mishandling some of the more volatile typings

Harmful: This is for when I believe a mon is actively in danger, both in the wild and in home environments.

The Out of Character Truth -

This blog is just for fun. Obviously I don’t know the actual truth about pokemon health from a scientific standpoint. However, I will be using actual pokedex records, my own knowledge about animal biology, and some of my personal headcanons, for this blog. Thank you for coming!

DNI -

Terfs (transphobes in general), Proshippers (Incest and Pedophilia shippers), NSFW blogs please don’t send asks except on anon.

Tumblr Advisor Board

I think it could be cool to put together a board of the top Tumblristas in the world, that could see previews of what’s coming up and advise on strategic direction. Who should be on it?

Okay, look. We’re gonna do it like this, Matt. I used to work in market research. This one is free, next time I expect a month of free premium and if there’s a third time I expect a job.

TO EVERYONE ELSE:

A series of ten reblogs is about to follow, since you can only have one poll per reblog. Please answer all ten polls. If you don’t see them all, check the notes (this shouldn’t take me long so if it’s more than like, fifteen minutes since I posted this one they should all be there.)

1) What is the PRIMARY thing you do on Tumblr?

I mostly reblog others’ posts

I write original posts

I make/post memes

I make/post images or gifs

I make/post videos

I run a poll blog

I run a gimmick blog

See Results

2) how long have you been here?

Under twelve months

1-2 years

3-4 years

5-6 years

7-8 years

9-10 years

More than ten years

I don’t remember

3) how old are you?

Under 18

19-28

29-38

39-48

49-58

I’m one of the Tumblr grandparents

4) thinking about the recent Tumblr feature release/rollback, what did you find most frustrating?

There was no communication before the fact

I felt like the feature didn’t take Tumblr users’ wants and needs into account

I felt like the feature showed a lack of understanding of Tumblr culture

I felt the feature would hurt Tumblr culture

I felt the feature would hurt Tumblr artists and small makers specifically

I wasn’t bothered by the change

It happened so fast I didn’t even know until it was all over

5) thinking about the recent Tumblr feature release/rollback, what satisfied you most about the response?

Tumblr staff responded quickly

I felt like we were heard and listened to

It was nice to see our concerns were understood

I wasn’t bothered by the change

It happened so fast I didn’t even know until it was all over

6) thinking about features you use on Tumblr, what would you like to see improved?

The recent UI changes to reblogging are too confusing

I’d like tagging to be easier

I’d like to see the tagging system overhauled

I’d like to see the reporting/adult tagging system improved

I’d like a separate page for my communities

I’d like to be able to mark posts as for my followers only

I’d like to see the blocking system improved

I’m happy with Tumblr as it is

7) with the understanding that Tumblr needs to attract new users or convert more current free users to paying users in order to stay online, what do you think of Matt’s “top tumblrista” idea?

Absolutely not–this is very famously the influencer-hating site

Absolutely not–this site is too diverse for that to work

Absolutely not, for other reasons

I’m actually liking this poll method

The poll method is clunky but something similar would be great

I think the panel of “top users” would be great

I have no opinion on this

8) if you don’t currently pay for use of a Tumblr feature, why not?

I have paid Tumblr features

The price point is too high for my wallet

The price point is too high for what’s offered

There’s nothing offered that I want

I wouldn’t pay even if something I wanted was offered

In the following question, “pre-social media” refers to platforms like LiveJournal, forums, alt.net boards, early MySpace, and similar spaces.

9) thinking about the given definition of “pre-social media,” how much do you agree with the statement “I think most tumblr users I know would prefer pre-social media to modern platforms like Facebook and X”?

“Strongly agree” is not strong enough

Strongly agree

Agree

Kind of maybe agree?

Neutral/I don’t know enough about pre-social media to say

Kind of maybe disagree?

Disagree

“Strongly disagree” is not strong enough

10) do you think Matt should just hire me to do this so I don’t have to squeeze it around my break at work?

Yes, this was awesome

Sure, you’re not perfect but this was way better than what they’ve done til now

No, but someone should do this

Honestly I’m just sad you didn’t give us nuance/bald/vanilla extract/tickybox

I love the irony that if that new reblog change had actually happened, @prismatic-bell would have been getting all the notes for this post, making it completely useless for @photomatt for any sort of research purposes, because he happened to get reblogged by a more popular blog and would have not gotten all the notifications when people added comments

Like, I hope this clears up why we all hated that idea

This is an excellent point. I genuinely hope @photomatt looks at the answers here and finds them informative even though I definitely could have done better if I wasn’t cranking it out in an hour while waiting for my machine at work to come back online.

I especially love that as of right now, almost 70% of respondents agree he should hire me. I’m being wasted in this 90-degree factory, Matt, I have no degree but I do have a good grasp on Tumblr culture and how to generate useful data. Listen to the people 😎

I think the fact that you made these polls in the first place, on your own time, really highlights what sets Tumblr apart from any other social media platform, which is that Tumblr users actually LIKE Tumblr

We don’t see this platform as a means to an end, like how influencers use other platforms to make money off their followers and don’t actually care what platform they’re on, as long as it pays them… we see it as a community we are all part of, and that we want to see improve without losing the community aspect

Every other social media is just using algorithms to feed us non-stop ads, pumping out the most far-right Nazi content, and being completely overtaken by bots and AI. There’s no “social” aspect left to most of them.

Tumblr also has a Nazi problem, and dealing with that would be a great change to implement, but aside from that, Tumblr is pretty much the only place you can go and interact with real people, without being sold to non-stop.

Influencer culture is dying out everywhere… this is NOT the time for Tumblr to hop on that bandwagon. It would literally kill this website… no one is going to join Tumblr because it become more like the other platforms that everyone’s already sick of, and the more it becomes like Twitter or Tik Tok or whatever, the more current Tumblr users will abandon it, just like they did with every other platform.

Actually, that would make a good additional poll, I think:

What social media platform do you use DAILY, excluding Tumblr:

Facebook

Twitter (yes I will keep deadnaming Twitter til the day I die idc)

Tik Tok

Instagram

Reddit

LinkedIn????

Other????? (are there more??? I don’t even know)

More than one of the above

None of the above, and I never have used any of them

None of the above BUT I used to, and have since deleted my accounts

I have accounts for one or more of the above, but RARELY use them

I have accounts for one or more of the above, but NEVER use them

See Results

… for the purpose of this poll. rarely means more than never, but less than daily, I guess

I am not a market researcher, but I do love polls lol

I actually meant to have this as a question and then forgot it because I was doing it off the cuff rather than actually writing out and tweaking it ahead of time, because it’s a deeply important one. So thank you for adding it.

A rare boost to this blog because it has my highest follower count, and also because the reblog thing genuinely made me scared for a bit that the entire purpose of this blog (Bring recognition to pokemon posts I like, as well as be silly) would be defeated. Cause then if I reblogged anything to give it a rating I’d be stealing the pecking??? Notes???? I don’t wanna do that??????

Hey everyone! Pengu here, OOC post time.

Wanted to take a moment to thank you all for enjoying what I do! I have fun doing this, even as infrequently as I post sometimes.

I also wanted to ask you guys, if any of you have the means to support what I do financially, to check out my ko-fi! I do commissions and adoptables there as well. Finances have been in a very rough spot lately, and I’m currently taking steps to leave a bad situation at home.

I know it’s not always possible to offer financial support, I appreciate all of you nonetheless, from those who send in asks and submissions, to those who just like and occasionally reblog. Love you all!

Pokemon just do that. As long as they’re being monitored to make sure they don’t drown theirself, perfectly fine.

Hi! I’m new to pokemon training, though my family did have a herdier for a while. Are there any tips on finding your first partner? I’ve always been fascinated with bug types, but I’m a little worried— sometimes I’m told they don’t care for their partners or aren’t good starting mons. Any advice?

Congratulations on starting your pokemon journey!! Finding a starter can be hard. Everyone says it’s a matter of “following your heart” and that’s true to an extent, as long as your heart is also educated on the mon you’re looking at.

I’m not a bug type expert by any means, but I know there are certainly some bug types that make fine starters! Caterpie is the first that comes to my mind.

Like any type, bug pokemon are wildly diverse! Do your research, and find one that works with your needs and lifestyle. Don’t get a mon that’s gonna grow up big and with high energy needs if you live in an apartment.

My only other tip for finding your starter, would be don’t get a poison, electric, dark, or fairy mon, for your first mon. For varying reasons.

Poison and electric are extremely difficult typings for beginners, due to the inherent health risks if you don’t handle them safely.

Dark and Fairy are more issues with their temperament. Obviously, typings are diverse, but as a general rule, both these types have high energy needs, are highly mischievous, and need a loooooooot of one on one training. Dark types get a bad rep, but educating people on the responsibilities that come with some typings is important. Love fairy types with all my heart, still don’t recommend them for beginners.

Good luck finding a starter that works for you!

Hello, I’m a professional ghost type trainer and I recently (I mean like a few years ago omg) caught a rotom while going into a weird mansion in the middle of the night. My main issue is how do I deal with my rotors energy. They’re always hopping into electronics I’m using (I’m done having my fridge snap at me when I’m getting midnight snack), they keep using my fan to harass my mimikyu and my washing machine to spray at my dragapult and it’s making her sad cuz she misses swimming. How do I attempt to discourage this behavior in my rotom or at least to shit it away from making myself and the rest of my ghosties upset?

A fellow ghost type trainer! Hello!

Ohhhhhh Rotom. One of my favorite ghost types, but not one I personally can keep due to the other mon in my care, and their NOTORIOUSLY high energy. Sounds to me like your rotom is lacking some healthy enrichment!

First thing I recommend is getting your rotom some more harmless devices to possess. (a dedicated cheap phone, a noise machine depending on if your other mom can handle noise, or an electric toothbrush for some examples) Alternatively, making a space dedicated for your rotom to let loose in some devices, away from your other mon, is also an option!

As with any mon, discouraging a behavior is best done when you give your mon an alternative behavior that still meets their needs. Next time your rotom hops in a device and is harassing your other mon, direct it to a different device, or that dedicated area!

Some additional friendly battles while possessing electronics may also help rotom with that extra energy.

Good luck to you and your mon!

im not sure if your able to fully help but,

my sylveon (andromeda), has gained a....friend?, i should explain

ok so, i live in a fairly small town in akala island, i found my sylvieon when he was just an eevee, he was an abandoned starter and i gained his trust over a while and now we are inseparable! (he gets along very well with my torracat and i love them both very dearly:})

so now we get to the problem, my back door has poke door that leads to a fenced in catio so my pokemon can get some fresh air!

when i came home the other day my sylveon was in the catio, normal right? i assumed he was just eating or playing with the aforementioned torracat

well i walked in to see what he was doing and there was a wild (?) lycanroc pressed to the window looking at him!

ike anyone would i carefully called him back in to not get its attention or anger it.

so fast forward to a week, i was taking both my pokemon on a walk, and that same lycanroc runs up to us,

i am not trying to batlle so of cores i try to recall my pokemon and get OUT OF THERE, and my sylveon WALKS twords it

AND NUZZLES THE LYCANROC

so curently i have not been alowing my sylveon in the patio without watch, and i dont know about going on more walks, hes been moping around the house so im worried im not doing the right thing.

but im worried i dont want him getting hurt again, i really dont know what to do, i dont think the lycanroc wants to be caught, so if you have any adivice i would appreciate it so much!

( [ ooc ] sorry if this is long/badly written i suck at words cuz i have a learning disability ty sm if u respond ur blog is so cool!!)

Oh boy, a unique situation to be sure! If the lycanroc doesn’t want to be caught, that certainly complicates things… I would recommend at least trying to catch it, so you can check if it’s registered to another trainer or not. Have escape items on hand when you do!

If it is truly wild, your next course of action will likely depend on what form of lycanroc it is, the temperaments differ greatly between midday, midnight, and dusk forms.

If it’s a midday form, you’ll have the best chance at approaching it and gaining its trust. Midday lycanroc are known for their loyalty and gentleness with humans.

If it’s a midnight or dusk form, your much better off contact a professional from your local pokemon center or rescue to check out if the lycanroc is registered. Though speaking with your local center or rescue is something I recommend for ANY situation with a potentially wild mon.

That being said, it does seem your sylveon Andromeda (beautiful name by the way) has taken a liking to it. Sylveon are one of those mon well known for being excellent judges of character, so the fact he’s not fearful does mean something!

Take things cautiously, keep items on hand, and try to catch the lycanroc if you can! Good luck!

https://www.tumblr.com/inqua/154213664024/i-only-recently-found-out-that-some-pok%C3%A9mon-will?source=share

Given the whole risk of seeing/touching mimikyu without their permission, is this safe? I know the kind of damage those arms can do if they so choose

The post in question.

This situation is likely safe! For one, this Mimikyu appears to be domesticated, not wild. And seeing or touching part of a mimikyu’s true form is safe, as long as the mimikyu shows theirself WILLINGLY. The trainer in this post seems to be doing things safely, offering touch but no forcing it, and the mimikyu took that opportunity to give a show of trust to their trainer!

The real danger with seeing or touching mimikyu comes when people don’t recognize and respect its boundaries. But in my experience, a well trained and well-respected mimikyu is a surprisingly tame and gentle mon!

Hi, so I heard about some new programs for stereotypically "bad" pokemon and was wondering if I could get some opinions? Basically, people are considering using pokemon for these supposed traits. Like using drifloon and duskull for tracking lost children, hypno for insomnia, I even heard some people pushing for houndoom in more rescue operations, since they can supposedly navigate dark, tight spaces easier than arcanine. And while these programs are well intended, I worry they rely a bit too much on stereotypes

adisabledzombie:

is-the-pokemon-video-cute:

This is a big matter of opinion depending on the pokemon, but for me, I actually love those programs! Rather than rely on stereotypes, I believe they educate people on the facts about these pokemon, while also reframing some features that people view as scary or inherently dangerous, and showing how helpful those things can be with a well trained mon.

Yes, Shuppet (I know you didn’t bring them up but they’re the first I think of on this topic since I have actually used this treatment a couple times myself) feed on negative emotions, but in moderation they can be a very effective treatment for depression! An underfed or stressed Shuppet will begin feeding on too much of one person’s emotions, which can be a danger!

Yes, Drifloon have a talent for finding children in distress. Duskull I do have an issue with, mainly because the “stealing away children who misbehave” thing is NOTORIOUSLY just an old wives tale. Parents saw their kids were scared of the thing with a skull face and went “oh yeah let’s put the fear of DEATH into them so they won’t rebel, that’ll go GREAT”. But! Like most ghost types, they do have a skill for finding souls in distress, and are great for rescue operations for people of ANY age, not just kids. And, in turn, when being reckless with a wild pokemon, that can become a danger! (Though even in the wild, Duskull show zero preference towards “naughty” children, dear arceus that gets to me, yeah let’s scare the kids into thinking if they stand up for themselves they’ll get kidnapped by a GHOST)

Yes, Hypno can put people to sleep and then eat their dreams. They are a great remedy for insomnia and those with frequent nightmares when well trained! An underfed Hypno will start putting anyone they can to sleep and feasting on both good and bad dreams, which can be a danger!

These are all facts about these pokemon, and education about how these facts can be beneficial or harmful depending on whether or not the pokemon is well trained and treated well is important! While yes, there should be just as much education on how even the cute and “”“"harmless”“”“ pokemon can be dangerous if mishandled in the wild or poorly trained (as a fairy type specialist as well, I could go on and on about how fairy mon can be JUST as scary as ghost mon), I will take any pokemon education where I can get it.

I do want to touch on the Houndoom in rescue operations however, because while they are smaller than Arcanine and have better dark vision, I would think there would be much better canine mon to use in rescue operations, mainly because of the fact that Houndoom specifically have toxins in their fire. If someone more knowledgeable about Houndoom sees this, I would love to hear some more educated thoughts on this one specifically!

TLDR: I think these programs are generally helpful and educational, we need more education on how cute mon can also be dangerous if mishandled, but any honest pokemon education is good pokemon education.

hi !!! i agree with this in almost everything!! i just wanted to mention about the houndoom, while there are definitely some problems with their fire in excess, its about as toxic as like,, eating daffodils . it can fuck you up eventually ! but for the most part, other than the burns, they’re pretty safe!:) i have one as a service pokemon so i just wanted to mention:)

Some important extra information! Glad to hear from someone with a houndoom as a service pokemon, and glad to know their fire isn’t as toxic as my cursory knowledge led my to believe!
