study tip: don‘t think about studying as something you need to do. that implies it’s some tedious process, something you can’t really enjoy, just another task ruining your day. rather, try to enjoy the process. think of yourself as someone who loves the subject, who loves studying for the sake of learning. you’re someone for whom studying comes easily, it’s just another good part of your day. if you change your identity and sense of self from someone who struggles with studying or with a particular task, it will be much easier to get done, as we always strive to stay consistent with who we think we are. think of yourself as a productive person, and it's much easier to act like a productive person would.

How I Went From Academic Probation to the Dean’s List in One Semester

Introduction

So if you haven’t read it and want to understand the full story, I recommend reading this post right here (x) Long story short, while yes, I did have very poor physical and mental health that contributed to my academic probation, I also could have been more organized and overall a better student, and maybe I would have not had the best grades - but still maintained “good standing.” My first two semesters were rough. Then I took two semesters off. When I came back this semester, I was determined to succeed and essentially, I learned how to be the best college student I could be. Albeit, this was also after I regained control over my health. Nonetheless, let’s get into it!

I took some time off from school

  • First of all, what helped me the most was taking two semesters off. I won’t lie to any of you. I took this time to see pain management doctors, receive treatment for my 6 bulged discs that contributed to my chronic pain, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and re-learned how to live my life, I got my anxiety disorder under control, and I worked 40+ hours a week serving and bartending to become more financially independent - which helped my anxiety. During this time I also learned to be honest with my support system (advisors, close friends, and family), which also contributed to my success this semester.

I forced myself to use a planner religiously (for about a month) until it became an unbreakable habit

  • I forced myself to use a planner religiously (about a month) until it became an unbreakable habit. Planners are the biggest tool when becoming more organized. During syllabus week, I took my dad’s advice and wrote down every due date, even if it was TBA. This allowed me to be “ahead of the curve.” I am not taken by surprise by any assignments now.
  • Using my planner, I create artificial due dates for myself that are a day or two before the actual, posted due date. This ensures that my assignments are turned in early, or if something goes wrong in submitting them (if online) then I can make my professor/instructor aware of the issue beforehand so that something can be done. Write: “Have X turned in by today!”
  • Do your best to also not only stay “on top of” assignments, but also ahead of them. It is better to work ahead and have nothing to do (or due) for the remainder of the week than to be overwhelmed by copious amounts of work and studying.

I took pride in my work

  • I took pride in my work/notes, and set out to create work/notes that would impress peers (if they saw my work) or impress my professor upon grading my assignments. I specifically set out to “wow” people with what I was creating. This lead me to the studyblr community specifically with my notes.

I emailed my professors literally all the time

  • I emailed my professors consistently. Even if I had a question that could have waited until the next class - I emailed my professors. They were able to learn my names, and my grades are awesome because of it.

I participated in class

  • I participated in class. Not only do I sit in the front of the class because I can’t see (ya girl isn’t good about wearing her glasses) but I also do this because professors “teach to the T” This basically means that professors teach mostly to students who sit in the front row, and students that sit down the aisles. So imagine a classroom, and imagine which desks would make a T-shape. That’s where you want to sit. I also make sure to contribute to class discussions. When you sit up front, you are less inclined to be on your phone or doing miscellaneous things on your laptop. Your eyes will be drawn to your professor, you will feel more compelled to answer their questions, and you will pay better attention. With this being said, I was always the student that had to sit in front because I can’t see, but I was also always the teacher’s pet.

I purchased cool/cute study supplies that made me want to study

  • Buy materials that make you want to take notes with them. I really like Five Star notebooks. I also really like taking notes with Crayola SuperTips. Create notes that are easy for you to review later.
  • Which brings me to my next tip: actually review those notes later

Tried and true study apps like Quizlet saved my semester

  • I utilize study-apps like Quizlet. I know that there are many out there; however, I prefer the tried and true method of good ole Quizlet.

Pay your advisor a visit. They do not judge you!

  • I make appointments to see my advisors regularly. Advisors can help you if anything begins to go awry. I also made an appointment with the same advisors, so that I didn’t have to re-explain my situation. They never judged me. They can provide you with materials and resources for any issue you’re having. I am always blown away every time I meet with my advisors because they know their jobs so well.

I sat my butt down and did my work

  • I didn’t exactly “time block” study time because that doesn’t really work for me. However, when I had time after work or whenever - I sat down at my desk and made time for assignments. I highly recommend the Pomodoro Technique. You set a timer for 15-25 minutes, focus on your work during that time, and then take a 5-10 minute break before continuing. Usually, you will find that you either just want to go ahead and finish up or that you definitely needed a break.
  • I created a study space that I love. It is really miscellaneous and not at all what you see on the majority of studyblrs, but it works for me. I love my desk!

Buy some expos and a white board in addition to using your planner

  • I use a white board in addition to my planner to write down upcoming dates for the next week/entire month. I use a different color for each class as well as miscellaneous things I need to get done. When I have completed something, I just erase it.

Treat yo self

  • I congratulated myself for little victories. 96 on a test? Ice cream for you tonight, babes.

Figure yourself out as a scholar

  • I learned how and where I studied best. My two spots are in the library or at my desk in my room. I also seem to study best with someone else around me, like when my boyfriend is playing his video games - that is the perfect time for me to study. Do you study best with zero distractions, or do you like to work with some music on? Do you like background noise from the TV or completely silent? Are you a night owl or a morning bird? Figure out those things first. You can’t force yourself to study at a time when it doesn’t work for you. For example, I am a night owl so I know that evening - night is the best time for me to get to work.
  • I learned what ritual worked best for me. Having a cup of coffee while I do my make up, and then ensuring that I was out at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus was scheduled to come, and making sure that I got on the bus that came no later than 30 minutes before my class. Know your routine. What routine works for you?

The obvious

  • Go to class. Easiest one. Attendance policies can be brutal. Get to know yours. Sometimes professors also say things in class that gives those who attended the upper hand in some way.
  • I started this studyblr! Knowing I wanted to create content here kept me driven to take notes when I didn’t always want to.

I was honest with myself

  • I was honest with myself for my short comings. AP classes in high school were beneficial in many ways, but they really taught me how to underachieve my way to success. I hardly ever studied for anything and bs’ed so many essays, but it worked and I got really good grades. That doesn’t really work in college.

Non-curriculum based

  • I learned to say no
  • I learned to cut people who did not fully support me out of my life.
  • I cleaned my apartment and room every weekend. It’s much easier to study when everything is clean.
  • I made time to go to the grocery store every week. It’s much easier to learn and function when you are well fed.
  • I did my best to get some sleep. Your brain needs rest to function its best.

I know it hurts, but check those grades frequently. It isn’t like a credit score, it won’t lower every time you check it

  • I checked all of my grades at least once a week. I know it can be anxiety-inducing, but you have to know where you are in your classes, especially when April rolls around and you might realize you need to put in a little more work.

I became a point whore

  • I became a point whore. I took advantage of every extra credit opportunity. Every single one.

The golden rule

  • I made up a golden rule: Do not cram for any exam. To do this, I always started studying once my professor mentioned the test OUTSIDE of the syllabus. If you have dropped the ball and the test is a week out - create a study plan.

Believe in yourself

  • Lastly, I believed in myself. You cannot do this if you do not believe that you can.

Remember that you can do anything you set your mind to. Start shouldering the burden now by forging good habits. Be honest with yourself. Lastly - dreams don’t work unless you do. I had a lot going on with my health that lead to my grades being terri - yeah they were terrible. But I still was honest about my shortcomings.

Happy studying, realistic students!

How to get straight A’s in college. Seriously.

Yes, even if you’re taking the maximum credit load. Because if I can do it, you can do it too. Note: My credit load also included a handful of honors courses.

Side-note: I’m going to be a junior (how??) and an RA (!!!) in the fall. Life moves fast. College moves faster. Anyways,

Here are my top tips:

1. LOOK AT THE SYLLABUS AND WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN. This is step number one, and it’s not up for debate. If you do this, there’ll be no surprises, and if there are: point it out to the professor (a simple, ??? this wasn’t on the syllabus ??, usually works). Also, you have to check and see what constitutes as an A in that class. Sometimes it’s a 90, sometimes it’s not. (a 96 was an A- in one of my classes last semester. I’m so serious.)

2. Get a calendar. Not a planner. One of those giant calendars with puppies or something on it and write down everything you have to do for the month. Put it above your desk. This helps A LOT because you can see everything you have coming up for the next few weeks, instead of jus playing it day-by-day.

3. It is OK to use ratemyprofessor. Sometimes it can be really helpful, but pay attention to the more in depth reviews that talk about what the homework, tests, quizzes and projects are like (instead of “her lectures are boring :///)

4. Sit in the front of your class. You’ll be more likely to pay attention and less likely to scroll through instagram. (by the way, mine is @parissdb :) It also grabs your professors attention, so even if you’re shy, they’ll at least know your face.

5. Do that extra credit. A lot of professors offer it in the beginning of the semester, and hardly anyone does it because no one’s thinking past tomorrow. It may be what saves you in the long run.

6. Figure out your best method of note-taking. For me, it’s good ol pen and paper. It helps me remember everything. Some people prefer typing it out. This is beneficial bc it makes it easier for you to find exactly what you’re looking for. (Thank you, command + F)

7. Put your effort into the percentages. If an assignment is worth 1% of your grade, do it well, but don’t exhaust yourself. It’s 1%!!!! If it comes down to it, spend more time studying for that exam that’s worth 30% than the group project worth 20.

8. Please. Stop studying what you already know. We’re all guilty of it. It makes you feel better knowing you have chapters 1-3 down, even if you don’t know 4-7. The key to studying is to learn what you don’t know.

9. Learn how to study. (Yes, it’s actually a skill that has to be learned.) I’m the biggest procrastinator I know, especially when it comes to studying. But I’ve found that studying 2 days before an exam usually does the trick for me. I create a master study guide during day 1 and study it all on day 2. Depending on what time the exam is, I may review on the morning of day 3.

10. SAVE SOME TIME FOR FUN ffs. Seriously. You don’t have to study 24/7, and I don’t know about y’all but my attention span was not built for that.

I might add more to this later, or make another post because I could give these tips for ever and ever. But hopefully this helps someone out there.

How to Create a Self-Study Schedule

If you’re studying any foreign language on your own (or without a course) you’re going to need to be extra organized. Your language study is in your own hands and so is how much you learn. There is no one holding you accountable or motivated either. So it’s entirely up to you to make sure you’re organized and planning enough material that your learning at a comfortable pace. There are roughly two ways to learn languages on your own. There are roughly two ways to go about planning your language study: intensively or casually. Here are my tips for intensive studying and I’ll post about casual studying soon:

studying with adhd!! ✨🌈

before we begin: i have mostly hyperactive type adhd & these tips have worked for me! i cant promise they will 100% work for u & maybe they will work even if u dont have adhd. but again, i went from a c-student to an a-student with these, so if you think they sound helpful, give them a shot :-)

🍁 make a checklist of what you need to study before anything else. as you gather your materials, refer back to this list. once you have everything on the list, double check: is there anything else you need? check again. keep your supplies within reach

🍁 try to have a large study space so you can spread out! try the floor, a kitchen counter, or even your bed. this way, even if you’re messy, you can just shove what you don’t need to the side because…

🍁 only keep what youre currently working on in front of you. people with adhd need simplicity to minimize extra steps in their thought process (extra steps lead to distractions, forgetfulness, and potentially executive dysfunction)

🍁 don’t force yourself into pomodoro cycles - work in “shifts” while taking breaks and using ur hyperfocusing powers :-) working in shifts means that the minute you get bored of working on one assignment, shift to another. when you get bored of that one, shift back to the first. if you get overwhelmed or suddenly unbelievably unmotivated, take a break to breathe - when you get bored of breathing, back to work! do ur best not to burn urself out by working too long, but if you feel yourself hyperfocusing, don’t break your focus by forcing yourself to stop

🍁 prioritize! this is a huge problem for us - we try to do 30 things and finish 1. it’s incredibly frustrating to feel like you are working harder than anyone but getting the lowest results. the secret is prioritization (which goes along with simplicity)! write down three things you have to get done. do those. do you have extra time? pick two more things to do. done? finish your study session with one last, low-priority and low-stress task

🍁 rubber bands, bracelets, erasers, rubix cubes, and stress balls are my favorite things to fidget with when i dont have my spinner. i personally can’t concentrate in chairs that spin, but walking around while reading my notes aloud helps me.

🍁 if you really really cannot physically bring yourself to do homework, watch a tv show that youve watched a million times before as you do it.

🍁 take interactive notes! if you take messy notes with a lot of gaps at school and rewriting them isnt an option for whatever reason: write your messy lecture notes on the left half of the page. at home, highlight main ideas from the left side. on the right half, fill in any blocks of information you missed using youtube/textbook/other resources. avoid extensive colorcoding because…

🍁 colorcode when youre studying for your exams! make a box next to each main topic and check off when you are done with it. highlight questions/whatever you wish as you read through your notes to stop passive learning.

🍁 take it easy on yourself! adhd isn’t a curse, but it does make it difficult to do a lot of things that school requires to do “well.” sometimes you won’t be able to understand information as quickly, or you’ll forget to turn in your homework. you are doing your best, and that can be just passing a class or finishing one worksheet. youre doing great & you will succeed!

a guide to bullet journals

hey guys! so i’ve been asked a couple of times what bullet journals were and how to bullet journal, so i’ve built a masterpost that’ll hopefully make things clear! (:

what’s a bullet journal anyways?

great question, friend.

  • so a bullet journal is a flexible, customization, all-in-one/all-for-one system! it’s where you get to combine your planner, calendar, to-do list, doodles, schedule, journal, dairy, and anything else you can think of into one!
  • this was originally created by Ryder Carroll, you can check out the official bullet journal website and the bullet journal video to see how bujo-ing all began.
  • we also affectionately call bullet journals bujos for short (like we name our ships, we’ve taken the first two letters and mashed them together!)
  • you basically get to mash up all your organization stuffs into one notebook/journal/dairy!

where do i start + (is there a set way i have to do things?)

  • to answer the last question first, absolutely not!!! there’s no set way to do things, but there’s generally basic things everyone does but other than that, the best part of having a bullet journal is the freedom to do and organize and set up any way you’d like it!

here’s where i’d begin:

start by choosing your poison (a notebook).

  • you can use any notebook, be it a plain notebook you picked up at targets or a fancy pants one you bought at muji or something! i’ve used both, and both are equally good to use!
  • but in case you were wondering, most of us use journals (either blank, lined, or dotted to allow for more freedom in setting up our bujos) that are mostly for bujos!
  • bujos are usually smaller (makes them portable and light), only a little bigger than your palm, but honestly, the most important part is that you like whatever notebook you’ve chosen. that’s all there is to it, honestly.
  • what are the notebooks i see everyone using though??
  • most likely the bujos you’re seeing all around are either leuchtturm or moleskine
  • these are the more “official” bullet journals that are basically universally used.

next, start with the basics.

  • like trying to build a robot, you’ve gotta build your basic frame / layout for your bullet journal!
  • begin with a key or legend.
  • your bullet journal goes in a chronological order, like a diary. so as you work in your bujo, having a legend / key will help you organize your thoughts and help separate your tasks from dates, mark some things as important, etc.
  • in your legend, put symbols that’ll stand for things!
  • perhaps a checkbox so you can check things off as you do them? (most people put to-do lists in their bujo each day / week)
  • a clock to represent dates, exclamation marks for important things, etc.
  • you choose whatever you think will help you sort things out!
  • color coding (sub-point)
  • you can also color code your legend and bullet journal to stand for different things (green = birthdays, blue = school events, etc.)
  • an index
  • your index is your table of contents! it helps you keep track of everything you’ve got going on in case you get lost or want to check out a certain day or page that you did last month!
  • don’t forget to number your pages, kids.
  • actual spreads
  • there’s absolutely no set way to do things in your bullet journal, but you add everything and anything you want, basically. further below in this masterpost/guide i’ve got some different (and amazing) bullet journals and spread examples listed!!
  • most go with weekly spreads, some do daily spreads
  • but what you do on your actual spreads is
  • a to-do list of what you’ve got going on and what you’ve gotta to today! (on weekly spreads, people put the day of the week and a list underneath, usually)
  • doodles and inspiring quotes or lyrics or whatever
  • pretty pictures
  • ideas or sketches
  • notes from class or just a place to jot things down in
  • whatever you like, tbh!
  • the lists and stuff
  • sometimes, people dedicate one or two whole pages for one big big big list thing!
  • this deviates from the spread and is where bujo-ing is super fun, where you get a lot of freedom in how you want to set up and work with your bujo.
  • for example, you can have
  • a page for books you want to read this year, movies you’ve watched, goals for the year, habit trackers, a quote collection, etc.
  • all the rest
  • other things you can put in your bujo are
  • ticket stubs
  • calendars
  • photos
  • doodles
  • washi tape
  • habit trackers + water trackers
  • literally everything

ya thats about it, actually. that’s how to: bullet journal.

i know how to bullet journal now! what’s next?

you probably wanna know the things people use with their bujo, right?

  • washi tape
  • basically pretty (often paper) tape with patterns, colors, drawings, whatever
  • stationery
  • people use pencil, marker, pen, highlighters, and anything you can think of to draw or write in their bujo

any other advice, jo, you long-winded nerd?

  • ya definitely
  • don’t feel bad if you mess up or make mistakes in your bullet journal!! i do it literally all the time and it’s totally okay.
  • do what works for you
  • have lots of fun doing it!
  • don’t be afraid to experiment, yes!
  • go overboard, stay minimalistic- do whatever you like the best, basically.

finally, we’re done! that’s it, thanks for sticking with me for this long, folks!

here are the links to stuff tho (examples of bullet journals, etc.)

hi guys !! it’s finally 2017 and i thought i’d write up a post on how to clean up your life + prepare for 2017 to ensure a “new year, new you!” (:

clean your laptop! over the year, you’ve probably saved some random images, downloaded some random music, or just have documents from school that you honestly don’t need anymore! rummage through every folder and send everything you don’t need to the trash!

file everything this kind of relates to my first tip but file everything! don’t let everything on your laptop linger in the ‘download’ folder. since i’ve gotten my laptop, i’ve set up a strict filing system for every single thing, and the stuff that don’t belong in any home go into the ‘misc’ folder where it’s cleaned out every once in a while (:

change up your bed okay, i don’t mean buy a new bed frame or anything aha but change out the sheets, change the pillowcovers, sort through that entire bunch of plush toys you have and decide which ones you want to keep or give away/donate!! also, decorate your bed frame if you can (: i put up a bunch of xmas lights that my sister had (she used it for a halloween costume) which were bought from the reject shop for a couple dollars = makes my bed look cute + great

discover a new hobby when i say this, i mean actively look for a new hobby. go online, search up some stuff and take up a hobby that interests you. examples include crosswords (my new hobby!), sudoku, swimming, learning chess, playing card games, writing your own book, vlogging and creating your own videos, starting a youtube channel etc.

clean out your clothes it’s the new year and honestly, you know that half the clothes in the closet, you’ve probably never worn or don’t even remember buying! clean that shit out and either donate it or sell it!! some people out there may need it more than you do

clean out your bookshelf kind of like my last tip but clean out your bookshelf!! i plan to do this over the next month but some books on your shelf, you don’t have any plans to read or have just read it already. donate those to any charity stores, or set up a stall at a local market to sell each for a couple dollars (extra points if they’re still in perfect condition!)

clean your social media! i don’t mean revamping your whole image, but cleaning up that long-ass friendslist on facebook. some people just add everyone (safety concerns!!!! where they at !!!) and some people have never talked to who they’ve added. delete those people, and trust me, they won’t know. other social media tips: - go through your ‘liked’ tweets and unlike the ones you don’t really like anymore (did this last night with my friends, and it was really funny sharing some of our liked tweets!) - if you have a linkedin profile, clean it up and add some of your new achievements - go through your likes on tumblr and clean that up too - unfollow on instagram!! and twitter!! and tumblr!!

start budgeting + set up saving goals this is the inevitable finance tip where i tell you to save, despite me spending all my work money every week )))): but honestly though, budget (keep track of what you spend and how much you have) and set up saving goals for the new year to ensure you have some $$ at the end of 2017 !! there are many apps to help you keep track, and some banks allow their customers to set up saving goals for their card (:

get a new hairstyle or new style 2017 is the opportunity to revamp your look and have that 2017 glo up (: if you’ve had an inkling to change up your hair, do it. want to buy those new jeans you’ve been eyeing for the past freaking year? do it. the beginning of the year is the opportunity to restart and create a new you !!

i hope this post was helpful w/ helping you guys clean up your life for 2017!! i plan to complete all of this over the next week or so ((((((: but yes, remember that 2017 is a year all about you!! focus on yourself, stay healthy, work hard, and take good care of your body (: good luck all and my ask box/messages will always be open if you want to rant, talk, or ask any questions

How to recover an unsaved draft on Microsoft Word

This literally saved my ass a few minutes ago. Yes, you can recover those files that you accidentally closed and thought you couldnt get back.

Right after that happens, open Microsoft Word again and click File - Info - Manage Versions - Recover Unsaved Documents.

It is literally that simple.

BEEP BEEP BEEP! you’ve already hit your alarm clock four times this morning - that’s 20 minutes….which means it’s time to wake up - time to leave for school?! oh ship, you’ve only got 10 minutes to get ready! but don’t worry, I’m here to get you through the morning ♡ listen to me and stay calm

for real, get out of bed. now.

don’t just stay snuggled up in your blankets - actually get out of bed! there’s a ton of stuff to do and so little time to get it done~

pack your bag the night before

the last thing you want to do after waking up late is taking time out of your morning to pack your bag. just do it right before you go to sleep. that way, you’ll have everything ready to go before you even wake up.

also prepare your clothes early

i don’t know about you, but i usually plan a week of outfits on sunday. it’s usually a v loose plan like: “oh, this week it’s gonna be colder than usual, so i’m gonna keep my dark jeans here, a cardigan here, and my long sleeved shirt here”. after that, i’ll pick out what i’m going to wear the night before since it’s easier and i’m less indecisive.

be-you-tiful

if you wear makeup, keep it to a minimum/no-makeup-makeup look. that is, stick to the tried and tested sunscreen/bb cream, mascara, and lipstick/gloss/tint. if you don’t wear makeup, don’t worry about it! (neither do i keke).

know your knots

whenever i’m in a rush but want to seem put together, i opt for the classic pony tail or bun. you could also go for a topknot, side braid, the works - they’re staples - you just can’t go wrong.

eat on the go

i know it may not be ideal for some people, but eating in the car really saves a lot of time. i’m probably the only one here who actually takes her bowl of cereal into the car with her, but it’s totally doable. or, maybe just grab a cereal bar. but please, please, please, do not skip breaky!

route right

if you’re running late to an event and you’re not familiar with how to get there, use your phone (google maps is a lifesaver, fyi) and type in the destination, route the way, and then exit the app. it’ll be there in the morning, either waiting for you to begin navigation, or under the ‘recent’ locations.

go get ‘em, tiger

get out there and carpe diem! run to class if you have to! skip the elevator and take the stairs to get to your workplace faster (unless it’s on the 72th floor - in that case, the elevator’s your best bet).

good luck!  so I’ve decided to continue with the “disastrous mornings” theme since it seemed to be a big hit, so here we are~

so 2017 is here, and that means we’re all going to try to change for the better. we all know that most people don’t succeed, but why is that? my theory is that a lot of people don’t know how to keep their motivation consistent. turns out many psychologists have actually figured out a kind of equation for motivation, factors that play into whether or not we keep our resolutions, habits, and goals. i read this amazing book about this equation and“hacking” your motivation and made notes of some of the main takeaways. enjoy and happy 2017!

take advantage of “success spirals”

set yourself a series of achievable goals and then achieve all of them until you expect only success and failure is no longer familiar. this is a great way to get started living a motivated life. example: start out your new year by changing one habit that’s small enough where success is likely, and use that success to propel you to larger goals.

commit early on

choose now to limit your later options, preventing yourself form making the wrong choice in the face of temptation. signing up for a public speaking engagement that you know you should do is much easier 2 months beforehand, thereby forcing you not to chicken out when the going gets tough.

surround yourself with motivated people

have a workout or study buddy with similar goals as you. you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. example: read or watch biographies of inspirational people whose lives you would like to emulate. go on a social media diet, in which you only see motivating and positive posts by motivated and positive people.

visualize

visualize the success you want to achieve, contrasting it with the life you currently live. Add in implementation intentions and process visualization for more oomph. michael phelps does this for every race, “playing the video tape” of the perfect race in his head. this allowed him to break a world record in 2008 with water in his goggles.

get into flow

flow is a psychological state characterized by being completely absorbed in whatever it is you’re doing. musicians, writers, and other creatives often report this while making their best works. how to get into flow? tasks which are too easy or too hard are not engaging, so find ways to make tasks challenging but possible. compete against yourself, or against others. getting into flow is most achievable when something is familiar to you and you can do it automatically, but it still contains mentally stimulating elements.

connect your goals to passion

look for ways to connect tasks with major life goals, so that you can remind yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing. set up extra reminders of those connections where you’ll see them (ex: every day i make my goal of saving 100 dollars i am that much closer to financial freedom). make sure you’re on a path to goals you actually want and that the journey is making you happy. If it isn’t, consider something more intrinsically motivating.

care for yourself

everything is better when you’re alert. sleep well, eat well, move your body every day, guard your circadian rhythms, and avoid burnout. cure energy lows with quality breaks, movement, sunshine, and good music. match intensive tasks with periods of high energy.

kill perfectionism

if you can’t bring yourself to do your main task, at least get some other things out of the way. it’s not perfect, but perfect is the enemy of good. get used to the act of doing consistently, rather than having things be perfect, so it doesn’t paralyze you. do not be afraid of failure, because it is the fastest way to learn.

use rewards

celebrate your successes with any reward that will motivate you (treats, crazy dance parties, an hour of social media or video games?). we all know the feeling before a deadline where it seems as if our life for the next week is just a never-ending tunnel of drudgery and work.

play hard

this one is related to rewards – plan times to have as much fun as you can - this leads to more efficient recreation, and it also lets you focused on your goals during the other times, rather than just having low-grade leisure constantly tempting you as an option. ex: rather than taking a “break” every two minutes to check your instagram feed, do something that will actually burst your mood, make you laugh, or release some of the tension in your body.

1. Remind yourself that some day you will have to show your report card to someone important.

Such as admission staff, employers, business partners, your future spouse or your children. Your grades do not speak about yourself, but imagine how great your odds would be to be accepted in your dream college or employed by a big company, or how proud and motivated your children will be. This is a great way to stay motivated throughout your school years.

2. Make a list of all the things and perks you will get if you get good grades and continue studying.

I’m not saying you only need good grades to be successful in life, but it sure helps! You can either use your bullet journal or a piece of paper to pin in your cork board, or whatever suits you best. Some examples would be: high income, a low stress life, a greater chance to get a scholarship, motivation, a dream job. And keep these “goals” in mind.

3. Stay positive

Got a bad grade? That’s okay! We all fail at times, that doesn’t mean you’re a bad student. Study harder next time and you will do just fine! Keep a positive mindset and don’t over stress, you got this, you’re smart and you’re working hard, don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise.

4. Keep your study space and room tidy at all times

Might sound silly, but making your bed right after waking up everyday helps overall productivity, and cleaning your room and organising your clothes, shoes, scarves, makeup, and whatever else you have will too. Having a nice and clean study space is key. It doesn’t have to be an astonishingly and aesthetically arranged white desk, it could even be the living room table! But keep it clean and keep all your school supplies close by. The feeling of a clean, nice study space and room will keep you motivated and ready to do your hw or study for a test.

Hope this helped! xo
