These are not tumblr specific policies. Tumblr is implementing age verification in response to legislative moves that were made months ago.

Tumblr is a failing social media site that has escaped death multiple times already; they do not have the social cachet to defy state regulatory agencies. We know they won't say no to Apple, either--the porn ban on tumblr was in response to Apple's crackdown on explicit content.

If you did not know this was happening, you were behind the curve. That is fine. You're caught up now. The next step is to link up with people in your country who are working to preserve privacy, to roll back these laws where they exist, and to prevent their passage where they do not. In the US the organization you want is Stop KOSA--in the EU you can start with Fight Chat Control.

Repealing ID verification and blocking chat control will help everyone, especially the most vulnerable. We can push this back, but we cannot get it done through the Feedback form. We have to get it done at the legislative level and lock it down so it cannot be forced upon us. I see lots of anger out there. Good. Put it to use.

A Passive Approach to Boycotting Youtube, Without Giving It Up

Why:
YouTube has been placing more and more ads, and has tried to prevent people from using adblockers. Not only that, but they collect and sell your data, and keep encouraging the use of generative AI both on and off of the YouTube platform, which is a net negative for the future of the internet. Also, fuck google. Too big, too greedy, too monopolistic. Finding ways to take away their monetization, while still using the platform indirectly to watch videos puts more strain on their servers, and costs them money, rather than making them money. It's more effective than simply not watching at all, and more reasonable.

Step 1:
Use a Firefox based browser, with adnauseum to watch on PC. This not only blocks ads, but clicks on them as well. That way, it is still counted as an ad impression, requiring YouTube to pay creators for the ad. It also counts as an ad conversion, forcing the company that bought the ad spot to pay for a conversion. This hurts both YouTube and the company that made the ad. This also devalues the ad spot slightly. The more people that do it, the more it hurts YouTube.

Step 2:
Install greyjay on your phone to watch YouTube, Twitch, and other video platforms, and enable sponsor skip, and adblock. This allows you to take money from YouTube, while still having the convenience of one centralized application to watch your media. In fact, it's more convenient, given that you can turn your screen off and listen to it in the background, don't have to watch ads or sponsor segments, and can watch multiple platforms from 1 place, without as many annoying notifications.

Step 3:
Look into alternatives such as Oddysee that are run by open source projects, and don't have as much of a profit incentive.

Conclusion:
If you don't like the way things are, do something about it. If you don't like AI, find ways to block it. If you hate corporate greed, take away their income, while still using their service so you can drain money from them actively, rather than boycotting the platform, missing out on videos, and having a less substantial impact on the platform's bottom line. Don't simply not let them profit off of you, become a net loss to them as a company and platform!

P.S.:
Newpipe is another alternative. While, I do not currently know much about it, and therefore cannot vouche for it, it has been recommended to me by a fellow tumblr user. I'll have to do my research, and I'll post an update to this thread soon.

One of the above statements is Problematic and the other is slightly annoying. If we disagree on which is which then working together for a better future is going to get really fucking difficult.

by the way, ik everyone is paying attention to politicians' sex scandals, but you should know there was a collapse at one of the copper/cobalt mining operations in the drc with at least 32 deaths. here is an al jazeera link to the story. if you are reading this from a mobile phone or laptop, or if you use a vape, you should be paying attention. these are the people who have suffered for you to have those things. it is suspected that 200,000 people or more have been exploited into these illegal and dangerous mining operations. that is greater than the population of ontario, canada.
