Please be aware of common scams! If someone reaches out to you with a scam, please report and block them. Before we begin, we rolled out a change allowing you to reblog, like, share, and comment on any post in a reblog chain. However, this change also altered how we list notes and notify users of reblogs, likes, and comments on reblogs of their content. Based on your feedback, we’ve reversed the change and will be working with some of you before moving forward with any future updates to reblog notes.

🌟 New

  • The faster and more relevant GIF search experience that was available first in our apps is now live on web.
  • We made some behind-the-scenes changes to improve the quality of trending tags by removing semantically identical tags.

🛠 Fixed

  • The “Exclude from Tumblr search and recommendations” blog setting no longer disables in-blog search. Blog owners (and visitors) can always search within a blog now, regardless of the global search opt-out.
  • We fixed an issue causing Premium’s “Show only Blaze” setting to save as “Show all ads.”
  • We fixed an issue with verifying Gmail email addresses.
  • We fixed an issue causing logins to randomly fail.
  • We fixed an issue where the Trending section was briefly only returning two (or less) tags.
  • We fixed an issue on web that removed re-order buttons from the queue.
  • We fixed an issue in the iOS app causing the fast-reblog options to disappear too quickly when tapping and holding the reblog button.
  • We fixed an issue in the iOS app causing videos to zoom in a bit when played.
  • We fixed an issue in the Android app causing the blog picker to not be scrollable when reblogging.
  • We fixed an issue in the Android app causing the follow button to appear in the Dashboard for deactivated blogs.

  • We are aware that some folks are having trouble sharing their posts on Pinterest, and we’re looking into that!

  • The new Reblog Graph on web gives you a full-screen visualization of reblog chains, and it scales past 100K reblogs.
  • Android, iOS and web now support “Original Posts Only” and the full set of post type filters in in-blog search with a query. On iOS and Web, these filters also work without a query.
  • On Android, you can now save a post as an image, share a post to Instagram Stories. Just tap Share on any post to use these.
  • Queue and drafts now show separate counts for likes, reblogs, and comments.
  • Tapping “Not interested in this post” is now more powerful. We’ll down-weight the tags from dismissed posts in your interest profile, and filter out recommended posts similar to the ones you have dismissed. Basically: we listen when you say no.

  • We fixed an issue causing high-resolution image thumbnails to appear noticeably degraded on web. Your art should look sharp again.
  • We fixed an issue on web where the Image Options dropdown in the post editor looked like a disabled option.
  • We fixed an issue on web where the “Answer” button appeared on privately answered asks in the inbox, and a related issue where the submissions footer said “Post” instead of “Answer.”
  • We fixed an issue on web where the post footer could overflow on narrow or masonry-layout posts.
  • We fixed an issue on web where the notes panel could freeze the page when reopened in narrow view.
  • We fixed an issue on mobile web where the alt text button was missing from images.
  • We fixed an issue where older asks weren’t showing in the inbox, and older community posts stopped loading after moderating several posts.
  • We fixed an issue where image uploads could lose their color profile and appear washed out, especially from devices with wide color gamuts like iPad.
  • We fixed several keyboard navigation issues in the Reblog Graph.
  • We fixed an issue where users on older operating systems encountered SSL errors when clicking password reset or email verification links.
  • We fixed an issue where uploading very large GIFs could result in errors.
  • We fixed an issue in the iOS app where tapping “Keep reading” on a reblog whose original post was deleted showed “No posts found.”
  • We fixed an issue in the iOS app where tapping “Read More” on community posts opened a blank page, and a similar issue where reblog permalinks in Communities showed an error.
  • We fixed an issue in the iOS app where the first image in a gallery was mislabeled as the last (e.g., showing “9/9” instead of “1/9”).
  • We fixed an issue in the iOS app where deactivated blogs showed real avatars and led to empty pages when tapped.

An update for users in Brazil and the United Kingdom

To continue our commitment to user safety and to comply with local laws, we will start using age groups to determine access to certain experiences.

People in Brazil or in the UK, who are 18 or older, will soon need to verify their age to change content label settings and view mature-labeled content. Until then, the settings will be locked to hide.

As a reminder, verification is handled by our age-assurance partner, k-ID. Tumblr won’t have access to the information you submit, just the final age-verification result. Documents are deleted after confirmation, and facial scan data never leaves your device.

🌟 New

  • The character limit has been raised from 500 characters to 1,975 characters for all replies in our apps. The limit was previously raised on the web last month.
  • We have added new “since” and “before” search operators. Using both together will allow you to limit your search to a specific date range.
  • The number of online community members is now displayed in community recommendations and search results.
  • Posts reblogged into communities will no longer show notes from outside the community’s reblog.
  • Tumblr is home to some of the most incredible creatives on the web, from brilliant artists to creative fandoms. However, any such large community will also inevitably have bad actors who try to take advantage of the kindness and generosity of the community members, so please take a look at our new guide on how to avoid scammers.

🛠 Fixed

  • We weren’t displaying the right error message when admins were trying to update their community handle with invalid characters. This is fixed now!
  • When you receive a lot of grouped Activity items on Web, we now fetch more Activity items, so you can scroll through more Activity items before you need to click “See Everything”.
  • Ads are no longer interrupting background audio in the iOS app as of version 36.7. Please update your apps!

🚧 Ongoing

  • In the iOS app, adding tags to a queued/drafted reblog will remove its queue/draft state, meaning the action button switches to “Reblog” which publishes the reblog if tapped. The fix will be in version 36.8 of the iOS app. For now, either add tags to those on the Web, or be extra careful about checking the action button before tapping it.

A new way to see activity on your posts

Tumblr runs on likes, reblogs, comments, and all of the little ways a post takes on a life of its own. Until now, those interactions were bundled together as “notes”.

Now, on web (and soon on the Tumblr app!), we’re giving you more details right on the post:

  • Separate counts for likes, reblogs, and comments, so you can see at a glance what kind of activity a post is getting, and if there’s chatter in the comments or the reblogs, you’ll know right away.
  • The reblog button opens more options, including Add to queue (previously Fast Queue).
  • The total notes count is still available on every post’s permalink page (just tap the header to get there).

Why the change?
We want to make it easier to follow the conversations happening around posts. Separating likes, reblogs, and comments lets you quickly see whether a post is sparking discussion, taking off in reblogs, or simply stacking up likes.

Edit and delete buttons are back

We heard you. Many of you told us you missed having edit and delete buttons right on your posts, and we get it. They made it quicker to fix a typo, tweak a tag, or remove a post entirely.

So, we brought them back. You’ll now see edit and delete options on web right where you expect them to be.

Thanks for sharing your feedback and for caring enough to tell us when something doesn’t feel right. Tumblr is always evolving, and your input helps us make it better every step of the way.

it’s true!! you can now like comments on Tumblr posts. you know those little replies under posts? you can heart them now.

why did it take us so long? well, we’ve been busy letting Instagram catch up on reblogs (sorry—reposts). now they’re finally up to speed, we figured we could borrow one of their features 😏

it works exactly how you think: see a comment you love → tap the heart → bask in the mutual validation. check out the comments section of this post to try it out. 

go forth and like those comments responsibly!!! or, yk, generously, abundantly, and with all your heart. you know how this goes.

  • Fast reblogging or fast queuing on web (holding "e" to reblog or "w" to queue and clicking the reblog button) should now give you the option to choose what blog you're posting to, if you have more than one blog.
  • In the new post editor on the web, reblogging a post should now auto-focus to add content in your reblog.

  • Top tags should be back on all blogs!
  • Fixed an issue in the new post editor on web which caused text to be erroneously removed from the post when purposefully removing an image from the post.

🌟 New

  • On web, we’ve rolled out the Reblog Graphs tab in the notes view to everyone, and removed it from Tumblr Labs settings. Check it out on a post that has lots of reblogs!

🛠 Fixed

  • We fixed a recent issue that was causing the Following tab to show recommended posts instead of posts from the blogs you follow for some users.
  • On web, we’ve fixed an issue that was causing keyboard focus to reset entirely when closing a popover. Now, closing a popover with your keyboard will return focus to the element you were at previously to opening the popover.
  • We fixed a bug on web that was over-counting the activity items in a grouped row by 1.

🚧 Ongoing

  • We’re still investigating an issue in the mobile apps that’s causing audio to auto-play from some ads. We think we’ve got it nailed down, and hope to have a fix out very soon.
  • On web in the activity view, we’re still experimenting with the new follow relationship labels and unread indicators. That change may be gone for some users who had it before during the initial experiment.
  • We’re also aware of an issue preventing folks on iOS from accepting earned Badges. You’ll still be able to accept these from the web, even in Safari on iOS.

  • The previously mentioned issue with important checkmarks is now resolved.
  • We fixed an issue that caused all new replies on posts to be hidden. They’re now visible.

  • We’re aware of an issue in the Android app that’s causing the “For you” dashboard tab to never finish loading. Quitting and restarting the app fixes it, but we’re working on a better fix.
  • We’re also aware that the option to set who can Blaze your post is visible on the iOS app, but this option doesn’t actually do anything yet. We’re still working on it, stay tuned for more info!
  • We’ve fixed the aforementioned scrolling issue in the Tumblr iOS app. The app update with the fix is still under review and should be available soon.

Reblogs in a chain now get their own notes

The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve. 

Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.

If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.

Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.

This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!
