Thanks for your question. It’s a good idea, and it’s certainly possible!

Such a feature would certainly require a bit of love, time, and effort, but it’s doable—and we would love to see it happen as well. It would make a useful enhancement to replies. Limiting time would make sense, as you suggest—many similar apps only permit such a feature for a short time.

Leave this with us, for now. We will definitely take a look into it—it might make for an ideal Hack Day project! Keep an eye here at @wip and @changes for updates.

We couldn’t agree more. It sure would be nice to have! For now, however, we can’t say much more than yes, we want to do this. It’s just unsure when we will have the time or resources to do so.

Answer: Hey, @tartrazeen!

Good news! This is already supported in the API via the “exclude_trail_items” parameter when creating or editing a reblog. However, it only really works for posts stored in our Neue Post Format (NPF), which excludes all posts made before 2016 and many posts on web before August 2023. For that reason, we don’t expect this will ever be made a “real” feature that you can access in our official clients. It wouldn’t be too wise of us to design, build, and ship an interface for something we know won’t even work on the majority of posts.

If you don’t fancy doing this via the API yourself, there are other solutions to leverage this feature—namely, third-party browser extensions. For example, XKit Rewritten has something called “Trim Reblogs,” which allows you to do exactly what you ask… though with all the caveats about availability mentioned above.

Disabling likes.

Hey, folks! We’ve received numerous questions about disabling likes as a way of forcing people to reblog, so we thought we would put this answer together before WIP takes a short break over the holidays.

Unfortunately, we don’t think we would ever add an option to control likes in the same way we have the option to control reblogs and replies on normal Tumblr blogs. Likes serve an extremely important function as a way for us to understand how to recommend content to others—and it very much affects those algorithms that help power the For You feed, the “Because you liked…” recommendations, and how we sort posts in search results. People engaging with a post in any way—liking, reblogging, replying, Blazing, following—can help boost that post to people who haven’t seen it before.

However, we did make the conscious decision not to include likes in our new Communities feature and instead focus on comments. We may revisit that, but the idea with communities speaks to a need you’re talking about—the desire to have a known group of people who will appreciate your work, instead of throwing it out there to the void and hoping people see it.

Answer: Hello @quantummindclassicalheart!

Fun fact: we implemented a spoiler feature in one of our Hack Weeks! And we agree it would be nice to officially have that. Only the Hack Week project hit a dead end as it required far more work, and across far more teams, than we had expected. Ultimately, it wasn’t judged a high enough priority, as much as we’d like it.

That said, there is a workaround here. We would suggest making use of the Read More (type “/more” in any post) and adding tags about your fandom in the post (this way, people trying to avoid spoilers can add those tags in the Filtered Content). You can see examples of this in the screenshots below. Thanks for your questions, and keep them coming!

Good question, and timely: this could certainly be fun, and video is something we are taking another look at right now. But while this is an idea that we’re interested in, we haven’t put it on the roadmap yet—we’re focusing on the fundamentals of video on Tumblr first, and this idea is not something we can talk about with any certainty.

While adding an AI-generated Community Label would be nice, for example, that would require a lot of changes that we do not have the resources for right now—unfortunately, there just isn’t space for it on the roadmap.

But it is a good point, a good question—and a super interesting idea! This is certainly something we want to take a deeper look into, so keep an eye on @changes for the latest news.
