I’d love to be able to send out a daily newsletter of my tumblr posts, for the benefit of friends who won’t use tumblr. Nothing fancy — no metrics, no segmentation, no pro features. Just a simple mailing list, distributed daily. It would be fine if the newsletter looked like the default tumblr design. As of now, I'm accomplishing this by piping my RSS feed through the MailChimp free tier, which works but is not great because Tumbr's RSS feeds are janky.

There are a lot of great ways to share Tumblr off of Tumblr! While email isn’t in the works right now, it’s a good idea, and it’s certainly something we’ve made note of—perhaps we could look into this in the future.

For now, we enthusiastically encourage the sharing of Tumblr content on platforms such as Facebook, Reddit, Threads, Pinterest, Mastodon, and Bluesky. You can share Tumblr posts via email, too, and find out more about sharing and embedding Tumblr content over at the Help Center.

A slightly complex answer for you here. So, right now, no, we’re not planning on doing this.

But it is a cool idea. We have actually had similar thoughts ourselves during recent team meetups that would be a daily digest not dissimilar to what you are suggesting. It could be an email, it could be something else, but it is something for us to consider.

Answer: Hi, @richardmurrayhumblr!

A great question! The short answer is that we have, as luck would have it, started opening Communities to the API. Find out more right here via @changes.

The longer answer is an even more emphatic yes—we hope to open it up as much as it can be supported. Public communities technically already have an RSS feed (because they’re shared blogs behind the scenes) but we just don’t have a friendly URL for them yet. Regarding sharing to Twitter and Facebook, we had to remove those integrations some time ago. For Discord, we are planning on using a similar set of features, like our existing Discord integration for communities.

We have now modified the “Dismiss” feature, formerly known as “This particular post isn’t for me.” If you dismiss a post from now on, you won’t see the original post—or any of its reblogs on your “Following” or “For you” feeds. You may have seen the news in this update over at Changes recently.

Previously, you were only dismissing the exact post you have clicked “Dismiss” on. However, some of its reblogs might have been recommended to you later on.

We won’t dismiss posts forever… but hopefully for long enough.

We will work on allowing you to dismiss any post on the Following feed, even those from blogs you follow. So please do keep an eye on the @changes blog for updates ;)

While we are busy working on making Tumblr better every day, we do keep in mind your suggestions. So thanks again for your feedback, and keep them coming!

So, your last point is a misconception I’d love to clear up: blogs without custom themes do have RSS feeds! For example, while https://macmanx.tumblr.com/ redirects to https://www.tumblr.com/macmanx, https://macmanx.tumblr.com/rss does not redirect and works exactly as it does if the blog did have a custom theme. The exception is if the blog is “hidden” and requires login to view—these blogs do not have RSS feeds, because there is no way to authenticate with Tumblr over RSS! Since this is a privacy setting, this is fully intentional.

As for the other concerns, I agree—it would be awesome to see RSS get more support. Unfortunately, it’s not really aligned with our current priorities. In the meantime, if your RSS reader has a setting to simply visit the webpage of feed items (I know Mozilla Thunderbird has one), I’d recommend using that to read Tumblr posts via RSS.

As it happens, we, too, don’t dig anything that prevents non-logged-in people from seeing content on a network either—but it’s also true that requiring an account more often has helped Tumblr grow a fair bit in the last couple of years, so there’s a balance we’re trying to maintain. However, easing up that login wall is unlikely as things stand today. But we do have a suggestion. A loophole, if you will.

We would remind you that every blog on Tumblr has an RSS feed that’s free to use and doesn’t have any login wall—just add /rss to any blog URL, i.e., https://cyle.tumblr.com/rss.

We understand this is probably not exactly what you’re looking for, but maybe in the same direction. We hope it helps either way—and thank you for your question.

because of the way notifications are grouped up, a hundred likes from different people on the same post might get lumped into one notification, which is beautiful and simple and easy to read,

but, if one singular person likes a LOT of your posts, it can blow up your whole activity feed, since each will register as an individual notification—a lot of times, people who like posts like this will get blocked for being "annoying" and making it so that the blog owner can't see their friends interacting in their feed.

as somebody mildly annoyed when this happens to my blog, but who doesn't block people for doing that, i want to know:

could it ever be possible to create a notification for, say, a single individual liking more than 10 of your posts in, idk, a day or something? i think it would both clean up the activity feed for a lot of people, and would give a new funny metric for something like. idk, "@yourbestestfriend liked 437 of your posts" i think notifs like that would be funny instead of frustrating.

Thanks for your question. It’s a good idea, and it’s certainly possible!

Such a feature would certainly require a bit of love, time, and effort, but it’s doable—and we would love to see it happen as well. It would make a useful enhancement to replies. Limiting time would make sense, as you suggest—many similar apps only permit such a feature for a short time.

A little good news for you. We want to do it, and we are currently working on replies. We’ve got quite the to-do list right now, so there is no concrete timeline as yet—but it’s recognized among the team that replies can be improved, and we plan on getting to it soon.
